How to Start the Conversation About Extra Help

There is rarely a good moment to suggest that a parent might need a hand at home. The conversation carries more than it looks like it does — independence, pride, and the shape of a relationship that has run one way for fifty years.

Lead with the day, not the diagnosis

Opening with what is hard tends to put people on the defensive. Opening with the day usually does not. “What is the part of the morning you would happily hand to somebody else?” invites an answer that is practical rather than personal.

You will often find the first thing offered is small — the shopping, the laundry, getting to an appointment. Start there. Support that begins with one manageable task is far easier to accept, and far easier to extend later.

Give the decision back

Where you can, offer choices rather than conclusions. Which two mornings. Which tasks. Whether to meet a caregiver before committing to anything at all. A person who has chosen the arrangement tends to keep it; a person who had it arranged for them often does not.

Expect to have it more than once

Very few families settle this in a single sitting, and treating the first “no” as final is usually a mistake. Leave it, come back in a few weeks, and let the idea sit in between. What sounds like an imposition in March can sound sensible by May.

If it helps, we are happy to talk it through with you before you raise it at home. There is no obligation, and nothing goes ahead until the person receiving care says so.
