Companionship Is Care Too

Ask families what they hoped care would do, and the practical answers come first: meals, the house, getting out. Ask them a few months in what actually changed things, and the answer is very often the conversation.

What the hours actually hold

A companionship visit is rarely one thing. It is a cup of tea and the crossword, a lift to the shops, a hand with the photographs somebody has been meaning to sort for two years. The tasks are a frame; the point is that somebody turned up and stayed a while.

Why the same face matters

This is the part of care most damaged by constant rota changes. Familiarity is what lets a visit relax into something ordinary, and it is why we work hard to keep the same caregivers with the same people rather than simply filling slots.

It helps the family too

When somebody else has spent two hours in the house that week, the family call stops being the only source of company — and stops having to carry quite so much. Relatives often notice that difference before the person receiving care mentions it.
