Questions Worth Asking Any Home Care Provider

Choosing a provider is difficult partly because every brochure says much the same thing. These are the questions that tend to separate them, and we would encourage you to put them to us as readily as to anybody else.

Who will actually be coming?

Ask how many different caregivers a typical client sees in a month, and what happens when a regular is on holiday. Consistency is the thing families miss most when it is absent, and the honest answer to this question tells you a lot.

What happens if a visit is missed?

Every provider has a late or missed visit at some point. What matters is whether there is a system — who notices, how quickly, and who calls you. “It does not happen” is not a reassuring answer.

How do you change the plan?

Needs shift. Find out how quickly hours can go up or down, whether there is a notice period, and whether a review costs anything. Ask what a family has to do to reduce their care, not just to increase it.

What is not included?

Ask directly what falls outside the service, and where the line sits between what a caregiver can do and what needs a qualified clinician. A provider that is clear about its limits is usually clear about everything else.

Can we meet first?

You should be able to meet a caregiver, or at least talk to the person managing the care, before anything is signed. If that is difficult to arrange, treat it as information.
